4. Birthing in Las Alpujarras

Pregnancy, Birth & Postpartum Support in the area of the Alpujarras.

🌹What is Da-a-Luz?

Da-a-Luz is an educational centre in southern Spain with a deep reverence for the transformational time of the childbearing year. A 9 month programme is offered as an ‘Introduction to the Path of Midwifery’ for those wishing to dive into holistic family support & considering if traditional midwifery is a path they wish to follow in their future years, for those who have formal midwifery training already to expand their knowledge & understanding of holistic approaches to support & for people wishing to be a doula to families.

Families planning to birth in the area can also book to attend Individual Modules to inform themselves in different modalities.

🌹Is Da-a-Luz a Birth Centre?

No. There are no birthing options at Da-a-Luz.

Many families do choose to come to the Alpujarra area of Spain but firstly because it has been well know since the 1960’s for it’s creative, artistic, musical & alternative way of living more outside the main stream system of life.

Its natural beauty also draws people to the area.

Home birth in this area has been happening long before Da-a-Luz existed, midwives & family doctors have been providing this type of support that families request for decades.

🌹What pregnancy, birth & postpartum support is available in the area?

Women requesting home births has continued to grow as more & more families become despondent with the limited options the medical system offers them. Many families already living in the Alpujarras choose this option of birth & many others travel to this area specifically to give birth.

Some are looking for practitioner support for their journey, others only for the culture of alternative choice to the main stream but wish to take full responsibility for their situation & do not engage with any practitioners.

Pregnancy education classes are offered in the wider area by several different practitioners, plus individual support can be planned.

Birth support can be found on many different levels by practitioners & this is for the family to decide what they want for their situation.

Postpartum support is available & choices can be from home help, breastfeeding, body therapy, nutrition to more clinical knowledge.

In Granada or Motril medical based options for pregnancy, birth & postpartum can be found through the hospital system, both public & private.

The Oceania Team of midwives based in Granada offer a home birth service whilst also been closely linked to hospital work too.

🌹Different types of Practitioners.

There are many words to describe the support people available in birth across the world (midwives, birthkeepers, doulas, birth guardians, parteras, doctors, birth supporters, obstetric nurses & probably more), no different in the Alpujarras.

It is for each family to research & discuss with people they meet their individual training, experience & scope of practice. Options range from emotional, holistic body health, practical home help, knowledge sharing to medical support.

Da-a-Luz students are not endorsed by the school to practice as midwives. This is a life long path of learning, whether done through formal training or traditional empirical training. We should all be humbled by birth & be forever learning.

All practitioners take responsibility for their own practice, actions & offerings.

NOTE: This is an overview of the Alpujarras & in no way covers all options or suggests one approach over another. This is for families to do their research & decide on what & who may suit them best to walk their journey with them.
